Posted in Rangers

Update: 3:44PM:

Steve Zipay tweets that the two sides are talking and that “where there is smoke, there is fire”

…That is the one thing to take away, even if it takes another week or so to get done. There is smoke between the two sides and certainly the Rangers want him in camp when that starts next Friday.

Hopefully he doesn’t sign when I am in Temple the next two days. And Shanah Tovah

Update: 3:38PM

Gross tweets that another source has told him that the two sides have made progress, but that nothing is ready to be signed yet.

…Am I the only one who was convinced that if Staal at least didn’t start training camp he would be there soon after? I get the feeling that people think he was gone from the Rangers just because they hit an early snag.

Update: 3:32PM:

Andrew Gross writes at Ranger Rants that an NHL source has told him that the two sides are getting closer on a contract.

…That is a nice to see, someone connected with the team reporting that they are getting close. They should be getting close, training camp starts in nine days.

Update: 3:28PM:

According to Cassie Campbell of CBC, a Calgary radio station doesn’t think that the Staal contract is likely but is still looking into it.

….And the refuting begins. Call me crazy but with all the nonsense that people put out on twitter and other stuff, is it wrong to want to see a report from Darren Dreger of Bob McKenzie. Again, I am not saying that this original Sportsnet report is wrong, just that I want to see more confirmation

Original Post:

According to Sportsnet in Canada, the Rangers and Marc Staal may be close to a new contract.

…I can’t in any way confirm if this is true or false right now. All it says is that “they are said to be close.” That doesn’t do much for me and while its Sportsnet, a TV Station in Canada, its not coming from Nick Kypreos or Darren Millard who have both broken news before.

I saw this about a half-hour ago or so and was sort of waiting on anyone else to confirm or give further information on it. That hasn’t happened yet and while I can’t refute the report right now, it doesn’t appear that anyone else is confirming this. At this point in the social media news game, you have to take everything with a grain of salt. The Bobby Ryan thing exploded yesterday that he signed and only minutes later it was refuted and shown that the Ducks and Ryan aren’t close to a deal.

At some point, either this report will go by the wayside or someone else will have more information on it. This could be the beginning of a bunch of Staal news though. Everything has to start somewhere and hopefully this is an indication that the two sides have at least bridged some of the chasm that has been between the two

…I would think that would need to change. The team has such a nice home ice advantage but never really utilized it last season often coming out flat at MSG and then having to battle back late in the game. Truthfully, I haven’t seen enough of him to really know what he can do other than MASH people but he will be certainly a player everyone has their eye on. Can he play well enough to warrant the fourth line getting regular minutes which the end of the season showed that helped the team the most? Hopefully? His salary is really too much to make him situational for when they play the Flyers, Isles and others, but they may need to suck it up and do that if he can’t play.

You would hope, you really would, that after the Donald Brashear fiasco last year, they would do their homework on a guy like this and know that he is more than just a fighter. The way that they talked about him after he was signed made it seem like they had him in their sights ahead of Jody Shelley to a degree. So you would hope that it works out in the best interest of the team

There was a time where it seemed like the Jets and Revis were $40 million apart on money and that came to an end. The same will happen with Staal. Something will have to go terribly wrong for Staal not to be in the lineup the Rangers’ first game. Maybe he misses some training camp, like Dubinsky did, but in the overall sense they just need him back in the lineup.
