Read: Ryan Callahan’s Return To The Playoffs

posted on April 13th, 2012 at 9:26 am

In the last week of the 2010-11 season Ryan Callahan blocked a Zdeno Chara shot and fractured his ankle. Callahan went on to miss the Rangers five game playoff series against the Washington Capitals because of his injury.

In his return to playoff hockey last night, Callahan scored the first goal for the Rangers and added seven hits in 20:34 of ice time.

In the NY Post, Mike Vaccaro writes, “Of course he scored the first goal. Of course he did. Everything you want to know about these Rangers, why they play as they play and win as they win, you can observe in the way Ryan Callahan attacks a hockey game.”

Arthur Staple wrote at Newsday, “It was all there, just in the opening 20 minutes. Everything the Rangers missed about Ryan Callahan from last year’s brief, unsuccessful playoff stay. Everything Ryan Callahan brings to the table.”

Brian Boyle told Katie Strang that Callahan was a “monster.”

Filip Bondy has more on Callahan in the NY Daily News.

posted on March 22nd, 2012 at 8:34 am

Last night, on his 27th birthday, Ryan Callahan scored his 27th goal of the season and his eighth game winning goal of the season.

During the Rangers and Devils game on Monday, Pierre McGuire talked about Callahan and said, Who would not want him on their team.”

In a louder voice, McGuire repeated and said “WHO WOULD NOT WANT HIM ON THEIR TEAM. Just an excellent example of hard work every single night”

On Callahan, John Tortorella said on 1050 ESPN Radio last night, “He just had an unbelievable third period and OT. He does so much for the hockey club and it’s fitting that he gets the winning goal”

Tortorella added, “I thought Ryan Callahan was our best player.”

Henrik Lundqvist said of Cally, in the Rangers post game notes, He’s been incredible, and that big block at the end of the game. A couple of highlights there for Cally, first with that huge block for us, and then scoring the game winner.  That’s the way he plays right now and it’s big for us.”

In his last five games, Brad Richards has 19 goals and 28 assists.

Before the game against Ottawa, Richards talked with John Giannone on MSG and said of his game, “it has been better at times. It is still a process and I am working on it as we get closer to the playoffs.”

Richards said that he has had some growing pains with the system the Rangers play as it is different from any he has played before, “We were trying to figure that out together and there were some growing pains in playing the way that this team developed it’s identity over the past couple of years.”

On Richards lack of offense so far this season, Ron Duguay said that it the Rangers system may be having an detrimental impact on him, saying “It’s a lot harder to be creative when you are so defensive minded.”

The following quotes were sent by the Rangers:

- John Tortorella on tonight’s game…

“We played much better in the little areas of the ice. When we tied it up, for some reason they ended up taking the momentum. That’s part of the game that wasn’t good. To go down early in the third period, you don’t want to script it this way as far as a win, but it turns out to be a good way to win. We were much better.”

- Ryan Callahan on his 100th career goal…

“It’s something to look back on at the end of the year – to say that it’s nice that you got your 100th goal and career high (24 goals). It’s nice to enjoy tonight but come Monday it’s another game.”

- Brad Richards on the first period…

“We were just happy… maybe not with the result, but with how we played after the first. It gave us a sense of confidence after the first, ‘Ok that’s how we’re supposed to play, we got it,’ then it was back to what we’ve done all year – just being patient and staying with it and trusting that we’ll find a way to win it and we did.”
