On Monday night, Michael Del Zotto played a career playoff high of over 25 minutes with four shots on goal, five that were blocked and four that missed the net.
Del Zotto scored the Rangers second goal, which was originally credited to Ryan Callahan.
John Tortorella said of Del Zotto’s game on Monday, “he played very well defensively and offensively.
Del Zotto said yesterday, “whatever minutes I get I am going to play my best. That is playoff hockey, everyone needs to contribute in any way that they can. I felt I had some good chances and hit a few posts.”
I was happy with my game yesterday. I think it a a good confidence boost. Getting one would have been nice but as it goes on you get more and more comfortable and adjusted. I am just trying to be better every single day.
Del Zotto added, “I was just playing off of instincts and I had my feet moving, I am at my most successful when I am skating.”
Del Zotto has one goal and three assists in the playoffs this season.
Michael Del Zotto has three goals in the last two games after not scoring a goal since February 5th.
Del Zotto’s first goal last night was his first PP goal of the season.
On that goal, John Tortorella said, “Michael Del Zotto finally decides to shoot a puck.”
Del Zotto told John Giannone “I need to get pucks to the net and can’t always look for that perfect play to make back door.
In the post game show on MSG, Mike Keenan said “He is playing with confidence. You see some Brian Leetch in him. I have seen some big improvements in him.”
On how Del Zotto’s game has evolved, John Tortorella said on MSG that Del Zotto needed to learn how to be a pro hockey player and added, “he has gone through the process, which he is still in, very well.”
Last night, Michael Del Zotto played over 27 minutes for the Rangers as they dropped to four defensemen following the ejection of Michael Sauer.
Following the game on Thursday, John Tortorella told the media, “He is a very important guy for us right now with what has happened to our D and I think that he has progressed nicely from his first year, to last year, to now he has gone through a little bit of a process and I think he has handled himself very well and still playing with the swagger that he needs to play with without going overboard. His decision making is much better.”
Following last night’s game, Del Zotto told Katie Strang at ESPN NY:
“He’s played really well,” Tortorella said of Del Zotto. “He makes mistakes, but everyone makes mistakes. He’s able to not let it affect him. His decision-making keeps getting better and better.”

At HF’s Ranger Blog, Leslie Treff writes “It’s quite a pleasant surprise that he has become much more thus far this season. It’s not that he never makes poor plays, but they occur much less frequently, and when they do, they rarely are hurting the team very badly. And Del Zotto’s defense has improved enormously. No longer a liability defensively, the coaching staff can put him and Sauer out there at crucial times. ”
I am so happy for Del Zotto. How he is playing this year is how we wanted to see him play last year. He needed to grow through some growing pains, he is still, but the potential that we heard about him is finally starting to shine through. He still needs to hit the net more, but I would prefer he get his defense in check and then focus on his offense.
