Adam: I was listening to them on the radio last night and loved the call, and the scream, from Kenny and Dave. They have such great chemistry together and put on an outstanding broadcast.
Marian Gaborik scored his first goal since the Rangers first playoff game and graced the back page of all three local newspapers this morning after scoring in triple OT to defeat the Caps this morning.
On his goal, Gaborik said, Richie handled it behind the net and I just tried to get open and it was a beautiful pass and I tried to get good wood on it.
John Tortorella said of Gabby last night, “I hope it gets Gabby going. It’s a guy we need as we continue.”
Henrik Lundqvist said on MSG about Gaborik, “It’s great. He works really hard. He wants to score. He feels the pressure if he isn’t scoring. I’m happy for him and he should gain some confidence from this.”
In the NY Post, while writing about Stephane Matteau and Pete Stemwoski, Mike Vaccaro writes about Gaborik, saying:
Now, into the Rangers’ pantheon of forever moments, we add another architect, we add another moment, we add this goal at 12:15 this morning after 114 minutes and 41 seconds of tortured, torturous, terrific hockey, a war of attrition you started to think might take us all the way to Saturday’s 12:30 p.m. face-off for Game 4.
Ryan Callahan added on MSG, “He’s come up big all year for us. He’s one of our go-to guys. No better guy to score.”
The Sporting News has more on Gaborik.
Gaborik has stepped up in big moments all season long and this was his eighth game winning goal of the season. He has had a tough go so far in the playoffs, being hit and double teamed whenever he is on the ice, so it’s great to see him get rewarded with this goal. Gabby wants to be the guy for this team. He has stepped up his leadership and shown he is an elite player in this league. His goal last night just reinforces where he should always be: in front of the net.
With the Rangers up 1-0 last night but Ottawa controlling most of the play, Marian Gaborik went to the net, waited for Craig Anderson’s legs to open up, and slipped the puck into the net.
After the game on MSG, Gaborik said “It was a quick 2 on 1 at the net and I tried to fake the pass to Richie, I went 5-hole and it worked perfectly.”
Mike Keenan added, “That is why he is a goal scorer. Most people don’t have the patience to do that.”
Keenan also praised the level of effort that Gaborik was bringing on defense last night.
On how Gaborik has played this season, John Tortorella said “I think he feels good about himself. In all sports all athletes have that inner confidence and that feeling good about yourself and where you are at is huge. We want athletes to feel good about himself. With Gabby he has a number of things that he can fall back on. He has had a really good year, right from day one and I think that really will be big for him as we start this series.”
Gaborik told Ranger Rants, that his move towards going to the net more this season was because that is where the goals are scored,“That’s the scoring area. That’s where you have to sniff for goals, fight a spot and that’s where you want to be. It’s not going to be coast to coast goals. It’s a tight, physical game. You have to fight for every inch.”
Gabby is showing no signs of slowing down from the type of player he was during the regular season. His hands and his patience in front of the net on that goal were all world and he just continues to look like a player who is determined to score on every shift he is out there.
Henrik Lundqvist said on 1050 ESPN Radio, “It’s impressive. He has been outstanding all year. He has been consistent and I am happy for him. He works hard for it and has a great attitude.”
Dave Maloney added “he has been the Rangers most consistent offensive player.”
In the month of March, Brad Richards has 6 goals and 12 assists in 15 games and Marian Gaborik has nine goals and seven assists in March.
The two connected on the second goal of the game last night that gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead.
On Richards, Joe Micheletti said, “He is doing everything well. He is skating, handling the puck, scoring some goals and winning key faceoffs”
Sam Rosen added that Richards has started to control the play when he is on the ice
Of the last seven goals that Marian Gaborik has scored, Brad Richards has had the primary assist on five of them.
On Saturday night against Toronto, John Tortorella said that Richards and Gaborik connected on one of the best goals he has ever seen.
Brad Richards is playing great hockey and finding Marian Gaborik in the best position to score goals. Ron Duguay or Joe Micheletti made a good point on the post game show last night, that it doesn’t matter that the two of them were supposed to click like this all season, what matters is that they are doing it now and helping the Rangers win. Gaborik has been consistently dangerous all season long and the two seem poised to bring this level of play into the playoffs.
John Tortorella said on HNL last night, “It’s one of the greatest goals I have ever seen. It’s one hell of a goal, but they can’t get scored on twice by the fourth line.”
He also added, “They gotta play a little defense and they are both capable of doing that.”
