Derek Stepan has ten shots in the last three games while skating with Brandon Dubinsky and Ryan Callahan.
He played over 20 minutes last night but was only 25% on faceoffs and is 45% on the season.
Stepan only has three points in the last eight games, John Tortorella said on Monday that Stepan is still going through the process:
“I always compare him to Brad Richards in where he is so hard on himself. He is such a student of the game. He knows that he needs to be part of this as far as secondary scoring. He has killed penalties very well. It has been a little bit of a fight for him and it’s going to be. He is just a young man in the game and I am glad he got rewarded at the end.”
A few weeks ago Brian Leetch compared Stepan to a young Brad Richards. John Tortorella has compared the two players before.
During the pregame show on Tuesday night on MSG, Brian Leetch praised center Derek Stepan for always being in the right place and having a high hockey IQ.
On Stepan, Leetch said, “He is a great playmaker and a great passer. I compare him to a young Brad Richards but I think he is more physical than Brad was at a young age”
Brandon Prust said on MSG that Stepan has grown as a player and as a person in his time with the Rangers.
Ryan McDonagh, his teammate in college at Wisconsin, said of Step, “He is a hard worker but he is a pretty smart kid.He knows what his strengths and his abilities are and He is mentally tough too and when things aren’t going well it doesn’t put a drain on him. He gets over it and gets back to making big plays”
Stepan said that he is trying to grow as a player and is happy with how he has responded to the opportunities he has been given.
John Tortorella told Ranger Rants, “Eventually he’s going to sort out the inconsistencies and I think he’s going to be a big-game player.”
Stepan also received the Broadway Hat today
