Brad Richards attempted nine shots in Game 5, five were blocked, three missed the net and one tied the game with 6.6 seconds remaining.
Richards played nearly 23 minutes and was 12 and 6 on faceoffs.
On Richards stepping up as a big player for the Rangers, John Tortorella said on MSG: “He has been doing it for quite a while. People were crawling on him early in the year when he was getting his bearings. I thought he was brutal the last game, but he has been a big-time player for us for quite a while.”
When talking about Richards and scoring big goals for the Rangers, Tortorella said yesterday:
”He has ‘it’ and has had ‘it’ since I have known him. I have known him since he was a kid when he broke into the league. He has made big plays at key times.”
Tortorella also praised Richards as a leader and mentor and “the intangible he brings to a young hockey club has been very important up to this point.”
On the kind of player that Richards is, Mike Keenan praised Richards on MSG, saying: “He has hockey instincts. He can read the play on the ice instantly. That’s why you need to have him as one of your top players. He can anticipate what’s going to happen. That’s why he was there at the right time, that’s why he was able to elevate it and that is why he was able to get it past the defenseman. It isn’t a fluke that he was there.”
Ron Duguay praised Richards on getting better at faceoffs.
On his goal, Richards said on MSG: “I saw the puck, that is all I see.”He added that his line, with Carl Hagelin and Marian Gaborik, had some good things going. “It was the first game in a while where we had our legs and were holding on to pucks and making things happen.”
All season long, the Rangers and John Tortorella have talked about how the team has “found a way to win.”
In the New York Post, Mike Vaccaro writes about how the Rangers found a way to win last night and were able to do it in dramatic fashion.
On what he was thinking at the end, Henrik Lundqvist said on MSG,”I was already thinking of the next game. It was such a big relief and excitement. I think we deserve it. The guys worked hard all game and we tried to create chances. It was great to see us fight until the end.”
Brad Richards followed up by saying, “We all know what can happen coming down the stretch. The odds aren’t always great and that is why you play the 60 minutes.”
Arthur Staple has more on this at Newsday and Johnette Howard at ESPN NY.
Filip Bondy writes in the Daily News that the Rangers seem like a team of destiny.
Adam: That is Rangers hockey. They don’t quit, they don’t stop and they do everything in their power to win games. Hell, that tying goal came with an eternity left compared to how they have won other games in the last few seconds this season.
Since not scoring in games two and three of the series against Ottawa, Brad Richards has seven points in his last six games.
Richards has had three multi-point games and 26 shots over the last six games.
He has also been at or over 50% on faceoffs in five of those six games.
Richards is averaging 21:23 per game.
Brad Richards scored his second goal of the playoffs last night that broke a 1-1 tie and put the Rangers ahead for good last night.
Richards also set up Derek Stepan for the Rangers first goal which broke a 145 minute shut out streak.
Dave Maloney said of Richards, “He was brought in to be a big time player in big time games. You need the big guys to be big guys.
In the NY Times, Jeff Z. Klein wrote, “Again it was Richards who grabbed the spotlight. The Rangers were disjointed for about a minute with the advantage before Richards gained control of the puck, skated to the top of the face-off circle and blasted a clear shot past Anderson that made the score 2-1.”
The Ottawa Citizen called him a “stud” and said, “Quiet for most of the series, Richards came up big when his team needed him, delivering a power play goal and an assist in the pivotal second period.”

You can always tell when Richards is on his game when he starts holding on to pucks and then makes a crisp and perfect pass that show why he is one of the best playemakers in the league. He had a fire and a motivation last night that he wasn’t going to let the Rangers lose, the same kind that Henrik Lundqvist has, and everyone fed off of it.
In the month of March, Brad Richards has 6 goals and 12 assists in 15 games and Marian Gaborik has nine goals and seven assists in March.
The two connected on the second goal of the game last night that gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead.
On Richards, Joe Micheletti said, “He is doing everything well. He is skating, handling the puck, scoring some goals and winning key faceoffs”
Sam Rosen added that Richards has started to control the play when he is on the ice
Of the last seven goals that Marian Gaborik has scored, Brad Richards has had the primary assist on five of them.
On Saturday night against Toronto, John Tortorella said that Richards and Gaborik connected on one of the best goals he has ever seen.
Brad Richards is playing great hockey and finding Marian Gaborik in the best position to score goals. Ron Duguay or Joe Micheletti made a good point on the post game show last night, that it doesn’t matter that the two of them were supposed to click like this all season, what matters is that they are doing it now and helping the Rangers win. Gaborik has been consistently dangerous all season long and the two seem poised to bring this level of play into the playoffs.
