Read: The Need For The Power Play

by Adam Rotter on February 8th, 2012 at 11:21 am

Dating back to December 26th, the Rangers are 2 for 47 on the power play.

After the game on MSG, John Tortorella said that the power play was starting to show signs of getting it together, but it still wasn’t good enough.

Ryan Callahan added, “I thought we had more chances tonight, a lot more shots. We have to start taking some positives out of it and gaining some confidence.”

In Newsday, Henrik Lundqvist said, “It’s going to be important going down the stretch here that we win special-team games,” Lundqvist said. “A lot of times that’s going to be the difference. Tonight, in the end, it was.”

Marian Gaborik told Ranger Rants, “We just have to work it out. We just have to battle through it.”

In the NY Post, Mark Everson writes:

With Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards, the Rangers’ extra-man outfit should be frightening. Right now, general manager Glen Sather has to be looking for a better backline quarterback/shooter before the trade deadline 19 days away.

He also says that the Rangers may not be leading the East in points for long if they can’t get the power play going.

It is up to the guys on the team and Mike Sullivan to work this out. No one player that they can acquire is going to fix the PP and the Rangers have more than enough talent to make it work on their own. It all starts with winning the faceoff in the offensive zone, hitting the net with a shot and then crashing the net for a rebound. Goals don’t have to be pretty count, the ugly ones work just the same.
