At Backhand Shelf, Rob Pizzo writes that this Rangers team has a chance to make history this season by finishing first in the league in points and winning the Presidents Trophy.

The Rangers are one point behind Detroit with three games in hand.

Pizzo says that unless the Rangers move up to 11th place in total scoring, they could be the lowest scoring team, in terms of rank, to win the President’s Trophy since 1967.

The Rangers are 15th in total goals scored this season.

He also says that no team since expansion has ever won the Presidents Trophy without a player in the top 30 for scoring.

Marian Gaborik is 37th in the league in scoring with 44 points.

Pizzo closes by saying, “So to recap, the Rangers could finish first with the lowest offense and lowest leading scorer since expansion. Which leads us to one pretty solid conclusion, Henrik Lundqvist is awesome.”
