News: Rangers Sign Dan Girardi (Update)

by Adam Rotter on July 9th, 2010 at 11:33 am

Update: 12:56PM:

Larry Brooks confirms the numbers of FOUR years and $3.325 million per season, and suggests the Rangers sign Marc Staal for SIX years at $4.5 million per season.

…I am down for that Staal contract. Six years at that price for Staal could be a steal when that deal is done.

Update: 12:33PM:

According to Chris Botta, the Rangers deal for Girardi is FOUR years and a total of $13.3 million.

It would be $3.325 million per season

…It’s high, higher than I thought he would get. I was hoping no more than $2.7 or so for Girardi on a shorter term deal, but he is only 26 and hopefully has his best hockey ahead of him. He seemed to be a favorite of John Tortorella down the stretch and that may have played a factor in his re-signing.

And how much does Staal get then?

Cap Geek says that the Rangers will have $4.5 million in space after this signing.

Original Post:

The Rangers have announced that they have come to terms with defenseman Dan Girardi

Girardi, 26, has spent his entire NHL career with the Rangers and was signed as an undrafted free agent.

He had filed for arbitration over the weekend

…Until the terms come out, probably soon, we won’t know how to judge this deal. He is signed so he will be a Ranger next season and with the McDonagh signing we can all start to speculate on who will be the odd man out.

And now it falls to you Marc Staal to sign your contract and basically end the Rangers off-season.

New York, July 9, 2010 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with defenseman Dan Girardi on a new contract.Girardi, 26, skated in 82 games with the Rangers this season, registering six goals and 18 assists for 24 points, along with 53 penalty minutes.  He was one of four Rangers to skate in all 82 games, and has played in 280 consecutive games, ranking ninth in the NHL among active streaks.  He led the team and ranked sixth in the NHL with 180 blocked shots, tied for second on the Rangers with 178 hits, ranked second in average icetime (21:29) and third with a plus-nine rating at home.  Girardi ranked second among team defensemen and ninth on the Rangers overall in even strength scoring, registering 19 of his 24 points at even strength, and he ranked third among club blueliners in goals and points, and fourth in assists.  The Rangers posted a record of 4-1-0 when he tallied a goal.  Girardi tied his career-high with a three-game assist/point streak from December 16 vs. the NY Islanders to December 19 at Philadelphia (three assists), and he recorded his first career multi-goal game with two goals on October 12 vs. Toronto.  On October 3, Girardi skated in his 200th career NHL game, registering one assist and a plus-three rating vs. Ottawa at Madison Square Garden.

A veteran of four NHL seasons, Girardi posted his finest offensive output during the 2007-08 season, establishing career-highs in goals (10), assists (18), points (28), power play goals (five) and shots (147).  His 10 goals tied for 20th in the NHL among defensemen, and he ranked second among team blueliners in goals, assists, points and power play goals.  Girardi also tallied a career-high, three playoff assists in 10 contests, recording his first NHL post-season point with a shorthanded assist on the game-winning goal in Game One of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal matchup vs. New Jersey on April 9 at Prudential Center.  Earlier that season, Girardi notched his first career NHL goal with a power play tally on October 18 at Atlanta.

The 6-2, 215-pounder has skated in 280 career NHL games with the Rangers, registering 20 goals and 60 assists for 80 points, along with 128 penalty minutes.  As a rookie in 2006-07, he tied for ninth in the NHL among first-year players with a plus-seven rating, having posted a plus or even rating in 28 of 34 games following his recall from Hartford (AHL) on January 25, 2007.  The Rangers completed their 2006-07 campaign registering a 19-9-6 record with Girardi in the lineup.  Girardi tallied his first career point with a two-assist performance on February 17, 2007 vs. Philadelphia, and made his NHL debut on January 27, 2007 at Philadelphia.  In addition, Girardi has recorded three assists and 16 penalty minutes in 27 career playoff contests.

The Welland, Ontario native signed as a free agent with the Rangers on July 1, 2006.

    How much

Why do you keep writing who the man out will be? Dont you assume the Rangers and Torts dont like Gilroy and he will be in minors or dealt away? There is no chance they are dropping Redden to minors especially when they have the cap room. If Torts had any balls he would say best 6 make it no matter contracts and stand up to Sather. A guy like Sauer is ready if he can ever stay healthy and would be better for this team then a Redden but I feel contracts mean more to this team.

I don’t assume that at all with Gilroy. He was benched because he wasn’t getting a big enough chances offensively to warrant his defensive miscues, like Michael Del Zotto was. Torts didn’t want two defensive liabilities out there in a playoff run

I think that Staal, Girardi, Del Zotto and Rozsival all have guaranteed spots for next season right now and will also earn them in training camp.

That leaves two spots for McDonagh, Gilroy, Redden, Sauer or whomever else you think. If Redden stinks, he won’t play. If he plays hard and plays well then he deserves the spot over someone that he outplayed. Its the same for all of them, you won’t see Wade Redden as a Ranger if in his pre-season games he goes minus all around and is turning the puck over.

    Way too much for Girardi

  • arab27

WOW Sather is really getting bad. This team has no plan or future at all with him. Listen I thought Girardi was worth about 2.6 million so the extra .700 doesn’t sound like much but Girardi is a 4th Def on a good team. If you were going to give extra years out to young players and needed to pay up a little you do that with Staal, Duby, Cally not Girardi. So on our roster besides the usual suspects who get paid a lot we now have Girardi making about .700 more then he should Boogaard making lets say .500 more then he should, Brashear making 1.4 million and wont be on team, and I am sorry but Sather did a horrible job with Lundqvist signing. I was all over that when he resigned, I love Henrik and would have killed Sather if we ever lost him but he way over paid for a guy who loves and I find it hard to believe would leave NY. Lundy is highest paid goalie in hockey by almost .600 thousand and he is not the best goalie in the NHL. But anyway if you add that all up that’s about 2.8 million wasted on overpaying players.

Both signings are solid IMHO. However going higher than 4.5M per year for a def doesnt make too much sense unless you have Lidstrom or Pronger type talent. Perhaps Staal will be there in 6 years but for now Staal should be the highest paid d-man for rangers. I cant wait for the Rozi deal to expire and I hope Rangers suck it up and bury Redden in the minors just like the Caps did with Nylander.

Also I wouldnt mind if they resign Anders Eriksson to a 600k contract, he was very solid down the stretch and could probably take 30-40 games next year, as long as they dont think he will play 20 min per game for 82 games.

Rangers need to focus two years out at this point when Rozi and Drury is freeing up 12.5M cap space and find a first class center so Dubi can play on second line and Christiansen on the third line where they belong. Unfortunatly a first rated C-man will cost as much as Drury so its crucial to keep the D-men contracts reasonable.

A first rate D-man would cost as much as Redden. We don’t have to wait 2 years, it’s that simple.

  • Big B

We also traded Voros for Steve Eminger. Feel more and more like Redden won’t be with us, maybe even Redden AND Gilroy depending on who performs best at training camp.
