Update: 2:55PM:

Quick Facts (Posted to twitter July 1, 2010 2:49 pm via Seesmic Web): @ He isn’t that great no, but has shown improvement & had some moments last year w/Wild, good in front of net, checks hard

Update: 2:51:PM: Bob McKenzie confirms that its four years and $1.65 million per season

Update: 2:45PM:TSN says that its a four year deal worth maybe over $6 million.

…Well they had to overpay once they lost Shelley to make sure they could get him. Not saying its a great deal, but he is 28, and 6-8. He does sort of hurt the idea that John Tortorella can roll four lines if what people are saying about him, that he can’t play, is true.

Again, they probably never intended to go this high for a player like Boogaard, just look at what they offered Shelley, but they lost all leverage when Shelley signed and needed a quick reaction to it. Not many guys can do what they do.

Original Post:The Rangers have signed Derek Boogaard according to Darren Dreger

…Take that Jody Shelley.

Boogaard, 28, had a cap hit of $875,000 last season. He made $1.2 million

He is 6-8, 257lbs

…BAM

Remember what people said when they got Shelley at the deadline. No body liked him. Wasted a 6th round pick to get THAT GUY. Well, hopefully this turns out the same way

Quick Facts (Posted to twitter July 1, 2010 2:43 pm via Seesmic Web): @ He is quite a character and New York fans will LOVE him. Hope he gets to score a goal at MSG #NHLFA

New York, July 1, 2010 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent forward Derek Boogaard.

Boogaard, 28, appeared in 57 games with the Minnesota Wild last season, registering four assists and a team-high 105 penalty minutes. Boogaard led the Wild with nine fighting majors, and ranked eighth on the team with 83 hits. Minnesota posted a record of 29-22-6 when he was in the lineup, and were 4-0-0 in games that Boogaard registered a point. Boogaard eclipsed the 500 career penalty minute mark with 11 penalty minutes on January 13 vs. Vancouver. He also logged a career-high, 11:58 of icetime and a team-high, five hits, on December 19 at Ottawa.

In 2008-09, Boogaard led the Wild with 87 penalty minutes, tied for fourth on the team with a plus-three rating and ranked seventh on the team with 62 hits. Boogaard tallied three assists while skating in 51 games. The Wild posted a record of 2-0-1 when he registered a point. Boogaard recorded two assists in a three-game span from October 16 at Florida to October 23 vs. Buffalo.

The 6-7, 260-pounder has skated in 255 career regular season contests over five seasons with the Minnesota Wild, registering two goals and 12 assists for 14 points, along with 544 penalty minutes. Boogaard led Minnesota in penalty minutes in four of his five NHL seasons, and ranks second in Wild franchise history with 544 career penalty minutes. He established career-highs in games played (65), goals (two), points (six) and penalty minutes (158) as a rookie in 2005-06. His 158 penalty minutes also marked a Wild franchise rookie record, and ranked 11th in the NHL and first among league rookies. He made his NHL debut on October 5, 2005 vs. Calgary, and registered two points (one goal and one assist) through his first five NHL games. Boogaard tallied his first NHL point with an assist on October 14, 2005 vs. Vancouver, and notched his first career point with the game-winning goal on October 19, 2005 vs. San Jose. In addition, Boogaard has registered one assist and 44 penalty minutes in 10 career post-season contests with Minnesota.

The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native was originally Minnesota’s seventh round choice, 202nd overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

  • arab27

First bad signing for Sather 1.65 mill a year if thats right its crazy

  • jets4417

    4 years total $6.5 mil. avg $1.625

  • unkoolsince1987

if its 1.6 mil a year thats stupid…i’d rather have shelley for 1.1 for 3 years then this kid for FOUR YEARS and over a mil…no player like that should get that much for our team. we cant waste that much dough on a player of that caliber

  • arab27

This is really is a joke………………………….whats wrong with a 4th line of Prust $825 Boyle and Weise Why waste money on this guy

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rR1EGzp9DLY

Definitely an over pay..but let’s atleast enjoy this.

  • arab27

I am so mad right now 1.65 a year for 4 years to a player who is never full time player in NHL

  • arab27

i feel Sather spends more time and effort trying to build the 4th line then he does with the rest of the team

  • unkoolsince1987

this is almost as bad as the 1.2 per he gave brashear….i dont understand….last year he didnt want to give orr 1mil per so he gave brash 1.2….this year he doesnt want to give shelley 1.1 but gives boogaard 1.6…just when i thought we were having a good offseason…

  • oleosmirf

you guys are making too big a deal of this…the extra 700K he makes over a comparable player really has no impact…

  • unkoolsince1987

hmmm check this out…his cap hit for the first two years is 1.6 but the other 2 years are free of charge? does this make sense….http://www.capgeek.com/buyout_calculator.php?Player=948&buyout_y=2012&buyout_m=06&buyout_d=30&Calculate=«+CALCULATE+BUYOUT+»

Well at least we have something to watch^

  • arab27

What Logic is we had to overpay him?????????????????????????? If we resign Prust for say $850 we have 1 fighter who needs more. And if they dont like Weise we could have resigned Hollweg for $650 why overpay for a scrub who just fights.

  • unkoolsince1987

    agreed^

  • Adam Rotter

Prust isn’t enough, that is why they got Shelley in the first place. He has more skill and tons of grit but is only 5-10. Remember when Torts put him on the third line for a few games.

This is a strict enforcer move to counteract losing Shelley and seeing him to Philly. I like Prust a lot and think he should be re-signed, unless they feel that Dane Byers or Brodie Dupont can do the same. They need someone who is big and tough and can protect Marian Gaborik and people from running into Henrik Lundqvist. They probably felt that they couldn’t negotiate with Boogaard that much because he had all the leverage and could take another job, thus overpaying

  • arab27

SATHER does realize he still has Brashear on the books right???????? If you want a guy who just fights and cant do anything else why not just put him on the team. Now we have over 3 Million dollars in cap room assigned to 1 goon roster spot. So as of now if you include Brashear and Boogaard as 1 player since only 1 will make team our enforcer is our 3rd highest paid Forward. Nice job Sather no one can justify this to me.

  • jets4417

Rumors swirling over Flames wanting Jokinen back… yikes

  • beckfan

This guy was voted amongst his peers in a poll S.I. conducted last season as the best fighter in the league.

    Shelly was second.

And so Sather is basically stating he’d rather have this guy @4 years than Orr?
