Read: The McDonagh Situation
On April 21st, it was announced that Ryan McDonagh an Derek Stepan would be the leadership team for next season’s Wisconsin Badgers.
Before that, it was reported that McDonagh would stay at Wisconsin for his senior season.
…It is McDonagh’s choice as to what he wants to do. He doesn’t seem to want to leave college and wants to finish his degree and go for that National Championship.
In the New York Post today, Larry Brooks continues to write that the Rangers have a big interest in signing McDonagh this off-season.
McDonagh, who turns 21 next month, would play his senior year for the Badgers if he does not turn pro. If he remains unsigned through next year, McDonagh would become an unrestricted free agent as of Aug. 15, 2011.
Chances are, then, if the 6-foot-1, 215-pound McDonagh, who is regarded as a proficient, stay-at-home type physically ready for the NHL, does not sign this summer, he will not sign at all with the Blueshirts.
…This doesn’t seem to make a ton of sense to me. McDonagh has unfinished business in college and has the chance to be sole captain of the Badgers next season. That in no way means that he doesn’t want to sign with the Rangers. He is from Minnesota, so its possible that his big scheme is to hit free agency and play for the Wild, but the Rangers can offer him the chance to play in New York, and I might be biased, but New York is a hell of a place.
Why wouldn’t he play out his college career and then sign his contract with the Rangers. Its not out of the realm of possibility to see that happening. I guess the thought is, if he doesn’t sign he can just wait out his time with the Rangers and sign where he wants, but if he wants to stay in college he can’t sign a deal, this is his only option.
