Note: Dreger On Slats

by Adam Rotter on April 12th, 2010 at 5:52 pm

A little while ago, Darren Dreger of TSN tweeted:

Lots of speculation in New York about Sather’s future. Only Slats knows what’s going to happen. One scenario includes Risebrough staying.

…There isn’t much there but if someone like Dreger, who is plugged in, is wondering maybe its something. Of course that is just adding flames to the fire.

Ill have more on Slats tomorrow but in response to this, Doug Risbrough is currently a scout and consultant for the Rangers but he has been a longtime league executive for many years.

He could be someone, that if Slats stepped away, could bridge the gap between now and the time Messier is ready to come on board.

while i love messier, i think fans need to look at guys like gretzky and realize that amazing franchise players you love aren’t always the best GM. Sometimes the guy who rode the bench due to lack of skill but made it to the show because of his hockey knowledge is a better, albeit, lesser known option.

do you think dolan is smart enough to look beyond a big name and find a brian cashman type of gm?

  • KingHenrik30

Brian Cashman is your example? In the NHL, teams can’t go out and spend 220 million on a team due to salary cap restrictions, they actually have to be creative. But, I wouldn’t be against finding someone else, an ex-scout with potential, etc.

My point with Cashman is that he is a guy from outside baseball who worked his way up through the Yankees system.

While anyone can sign CC Sabathia, I was talking more about the minor moves that are more him and less Steinbrenner that ultimately won it in 2009.

Not trading guys like Cano, Hughes, Chamberlain to get Santana. Trading for Nick Swisher.

It is a point less about the money (because Slats cant win with that either as witnessed pre lockout) and more about the type of GM he is, aside from the fact he doesnt have a lifetime job like Sather has for some reason
