If you had to summarize the Rangers season in one word, you wouldn’t have to think twice about what that word would be. The Rangers epitomize a roller-coaster of a hockey team. They play a few strong games that excite and make you wonder about their playoff chances. Then you watch the game against the Canadiens and it leaves you scratching your head. As statistical proof of an inconsistent team: the Rangers have earned points in five of their eight March games, yet they have won only three of those games. At this point in the season, those extra points will comeback to haunt you.
Trying to keep the morale of the troops high, Torts explained that 11 letter word that seems to plague this team, without trying to sound too negative:
“I don’t think it is trying to do too much. It is the consistency. Again, it is consistency. It is so obvious how we have to play and see how successful we can be with it. We are just not consistent with it. What we did well against Philly…we were on the opposite end of the spectrum tonight. We will practice and we will move on. We need to come back and beat St. Louis.”
…I am going to be watching hockey in a few weeks and I want to be watching the Rangers. But whenever I get my hopes up, they find a way to bash it back down. I’m not saying they played atrocious hockey; they were outplayed but it happens sometimes. The good teams, though, find a way to earn some points. At this stage of the season, we need two points, but I can’t help but wonder if it’s not clicking by game 70, how is it supposed to click if they make the playoffs? I will have hope until we’re mathematically eliminated, but they have to come out strong against the Blues, in the last game of their three-game homestand, to boost their confidence. One game at a time, they can do it.
