Quotes: Gaborik On Hits To The Head
Yesterday the NHL ruled that Matt Cooke would not be suspended for his hit on Marc Savard that left him with a grade two concussion and possibly missing the rest of the season.
Steve Zipay spoke to Rangers star Marian Gaborik about the issue of hits to the head:
“It’s been an issue this year, guys going down and missing a lot of games,” said Marian Gaborik, who referred to a similar hit by Cooke earlier in the year on Artem Ansimov. “It needs to be addressed. There needs to be mutual respect out there. When you see a guy in a vulnerable position, it doesn’t do any good to anybody to hit him like that, like Cooke. He’s done it a few times already.”
Cooke was suspended two games for a flying elbow he threw at Artem Anisimov.
Earlier in the day, NHL GM’s set forth new “legislation” towards ruling on hits to the head. Rangers GM Glen Sather told TSN, his thoughts on the new rules:
“I think it’s something that’s necessary to make all the players aware that they have to be responsible not only for themselves but for the other players on the ice, none of us want to see anyone serious get hurt in this game and this will be a change that will probably support all that.”
The recommendation still has to be approved by the NHL and NHLPA competition committee and the NHL Board Of Governors .
