Atlantic Division Recap: Devils and Flyers Win
The Devils snapped a three-game losing streak against the Nashville Predators – with a 5-2 win - thanks to the fire-power of four of their Olympians. With Nashville up 2-1 in the second period, the Devils didn’t give up, scoring four unanswered goals in a very solid offensive effort. Zach Parise (27,33), Patrick Elias (11,19), and Ilya Kovalchuk (32,30) – with his first as a Devil – each had a goal and an assist. Jamie Langenbrunner also helped out scoring once (15) and assisting twice (36), while youngster Travis Zajac (19,30) also had a one-and-one day. Cal O’Reilly (2) and Jordin Tootoo (4) scored for the Preds. Despite the victory, New Jersey had 11 giveaways compared to none for Nashville. With the win, New Jersey holds onto first place in the Atlantic for one more day.
Jeff Carter continues to make his case that he would be a viable option for Team Canada, if Ryan Getzlaf (ankle) of the Anaheim Ducks can’t make it to Vancouver, as his two goals (26) enabled the Philadelphia Flyers to win their third-straight; the latest a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Scott Hartnell chipped in with two assists (21), while Matt Carle added the decisive goal (4) for the Flyers. Glen Metropolit (13) and newly acquired/former Ranger Dominic Moore (9) scored for the Habs. Philly had 31 penalty minutes in the game, compared to 16 for Montreal.
