Buzz: Sather Talks To TB About Vinny

by Adam Rotter on January 17th, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Bruce Garroich, of the Ottawa Sun is reporting that Glen Sather has called Tampa Bay Lightning  GM Brian Lawton about Vincent Lecavalier.

…Who exactly? His name isn’t spelled Ilya Kovalchuk.

Lecavalier has a no-movement clause and would have to accept a trade anywhere. Garroich says that Lecavalier is on the market though.

He writes that the package of players going back to Tampa Bay would be Matt Gilroy, Wade Redden and either Ryan Callahan or Brandon Dubinsky.

…Please. That deal might not even get you a Lecavlier jersey. That package was probably never offered but one of Garroich’s sources speculating what it might cost. Obviously, as Garroich doe note, Redden himself kills this deal, not the lack of players going to TB, and that Redden has been offered around the league.

Garroich says that getting Vinny to approve a deal will be tough because he is happy in Tampa Bay.

…So that is different than what Pierre LeBrun wrote previously, which was that Lecavalier wasn’t happy anymore in Tampa.

He also quotes a source as saying that the Rangers are talking to people all over the league trying to make a splash and fix the scoring problems.

…Well, a splash may not be necessary but doing something would be nice.

Again, Lecavalier is almost certain not to be moved during the season. He costs too much, and finagling him under any teams cap would be tough. That isn’t to say that Sather didn’t call about him. Slats probably called to gauge the interest in Lecavlier to see if anything can be worked out. But that deal would be too hard to make at this point. Keep Lawton’s number though Slats, it will come in handy around Draft time.

Not for nothing, Garroich lists the Rangers as a team interested in Kovalchuk if he gets on the market and as a team that could be interested in Petr Sykota, who has been a healthy scratch for Minnesota.

…Been there, done that. The Rangers have enough players who miss the net now, they don’t need to bring Sykora back.

NO. I dont even care if all they give the lightning is a Rangers jersey. Vinny has 10 years left on his contract at 7.727 a year. By the end he will be 39 and has already had shoulder problems and wrist problems.

Marty St. Louis would be a different story as he only has 1 year left after this year.
