Zipay: Rangers Should Deal For Patrick Sharp

by Adam Rotter on July 9th, 2009 at 9:05 pm

Steve Zipay of Newsday, on his blog, thinks that the Rangers should go out and trade for Chicago Blackhawks center Patrick Sharp.

Sharp is 6-1, 200, and 27, from Thunder Bay like the Staals. He can skate and has good hands. 26 goals in 61 games and a bunch of points in the playoffs. 36 goals the year before.

Sharp is pricey, due $3.9 million for each of the next three years. The Hawks don’t want much $$$ back (so forget Rozsival), but can take a couple mill for one year or so. Run Korpikoski ($1 mil) and a d-prospect (Sanguinetti at $800-something) and a pick past GM Dale Tallon.

Send Voros and Rissmiller to Hartford when the time comes. In all, that sheds $3.8.

Get Sauer, Byers and Arnason on the roster. Might make it under. Squeeze. Carry 20 or 21 players, not 22.

Sharp is a good player, has great hands, a good scorer but for that much? I mean salary wise, I would include Sanguinetti, and think Glen Sather would also, in any deal the Rangers make to get a scorer, but $3.8 million? That is a lot.

It is also VERY important to remember that this is just what Zip is thinking the Rangers should do. NOT WHAT THEY ARE NECESSARILY GOING TO DO. I only stress this because rumors and buzz drive people nuts and there are plenty of people who spread false rumors are drive people into a tizzy. Zip is one of the best hockey writers around and this is just his thought.

I introduced that same idea yesterday on my blog…www.redwhiteandblueshirts.wordpress.com and nobody writes anything but Zipay puts it up tonight and gets the shout out. Where’s my shout out for coming up with it in the first place?

I believe we just paid 3 mill per for Ales Kotalik. So is 3.8 mill per out of line for Sharp? Definitely not, but with the cap players have to realize they will have to be very negotiable depending on where they really want to play. See the Hossa contract. Even Gaborik should have gotten less per year but for a longer time period with a games played incentive clause in that contract. If he were signed for 7 years for 5.75 mill per he would end up getting 2.5 mill more than he is now with less of a cap hit to the Rangers and only if he plays the games!

OK after the morning shower, dressed, and having read the morning news around the internet concerning the NHL the Rangers should go out today and sign Alex Tanguay. This guy had 81 points just two years ago. Health is a concern, but that seems to be the prerequisite for signing on with the Rangers these days. With a change of scenery and the right system and circumstances, and most important linemates. Tanguay should be able to be had relatively cheap. Considering his health and serious drop in his stats over the last two years how much can this cost. I think it’s worth the gamble especially checking what’s left out there as far as free agents go. Your thoughts are welcome my Ranger brothers. I can’t wait for hockey. The pathetic state of affairs with the Mets has made baseball a non factor for me this year. I’ll watch them but it’s usually to put me to sleep.

doubt its possible. Still have to resign Dubinsky, Callahan, Korpikoski. Get them signed this week so they know where their cap is at

Then move Zherdev for something. Better not just let him walk. Even Smid out of Edmonton and picks, something
