Buzz: Zubov and Morris

By Adam Rotter on July 09, 2009, 9:51AM

Pierre Lebrun of ESPN.com, yes ESPN does cover hockey, reports that free agent defenseman Sergei Zubov is talking to as many as six or seven teams and the Rangers are believed to be one of them.

Zubov, of course was part of the 1994 Rangers Stanley Cup champions.

“It’s a process,” Zubov’s agent, Jay Grossman, told ESPN.com Wednesday. “This won’t be happening right away.”

Zubov missed all but ten games last season after hip surgery.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that the Columbus Blue Jackets will not be interested in former Rangers defenseman Derek Morris “unless his asking price drops dramatically”.

A report a few days ago suggested that the Rangers were talking to Morris.

The Blue Jackets have about $10 million left under the salary cap, according to CapGeek, so Morris must be asking for something big if the Jackets won’t look to sign him.

Also from the article:

The Jackets must hope for continued progress by Kris Russell, who had two goals and 19 assists last season, and Fedor Tyutin, who had a career-high nine goals and 25 assists.

I wish he was still a Ranger.

Monzo: Again, another situation where I would rather pass and let the younger guys play.  The Rangers already have four defenseman with guaranteed spots next year with Rozsival, Redden, Staal and Girardi — and with Potter, Del Zotto, Sanguinetti, Gilroy, Sauer all hoping for a crack, I am content with letting the young guys play.
