Buzz: Gaborik For Five Years (Update)
By Adam Rotter - Jul 1, 2009 8:22 pm

Update: Glen Sather held a conference call to talk about the Gaborik and Brashear signings from today. Andrew Gross has the report from that.

TSN is reporting that Marian Gaborik is close to signing with the Rangers.

A deal worth 7.5 million for five years.

The 27 year old Slovak had 23 points in 17 games.

Monzo: This is a great pickup, but still not that number one center they need.  Not happy about the money, but the talent is there and he, no doubt, when healthy is the best skater in the NHL.

Rotter: Wow. It was starting to feel like Gaborik as the day moved along but $7.5 million. Wow. Huge move for the Rangers. If he is healthy then the Rangers got a top 10 player. Even at that money. Hope he is healthy.

Way too much money for an imjury prone player whose best season is 83pts….. I dont like it at all…..

Example….. Vinny Lecavalier for Tampa makes 7.7mil the next 5 years…. his last 5 seasons he had 66, 75, 108, 92, 67 pts, all while averaging 80 games a season, and playing for a pretty bad Lightning team…. Gaborik in no way deserves as much money as him…. Im at a loss… So whose gonna score the goals once he gets hurt? This just ate up all the cap room we had…..

first of all vinny is on the hook for 10 not 5 seasons.

As usual Sather paid about 1.5 mil too much for him, but he finally got the sniper people were looking for.

Now package Rozy and Zherdev for Brad Richards or look to deal Rozy to SJ for the 1 year left on Marleau’s deal.

Or a 3rd idea that is growing on me bring back Kovalev to be the playmaker with Drury like Briere was and let Kovalev be the playmaker for a sniper like Gaborik. Could be a special line. Kovy was only rumored to be going for about 4.5 before they recanted him resigning in Montreal.

I was just comparing the next 5 yrs for Vinny to the 5 years span reported for Gaborik. Simply stating we paid too much….. Durabilty and Avgs need to be considered in this. 5 yrs 7.5 mil seems like alot for an injury prone player….. 3 yrs 5.8 maybe? Thats moveable if it doesnt pan out ya know?!?

agreed i was happy with it when TSN originally reported 5.75 but that is sather over paying by 2 mil once again.

also not quite fair to compare since gaborik was just money where to get vinny we are talking dubi and then some.

Have you ever watch Gaborik play? He’s a natural goal scorer with decent size, hands, and a terrific shot.

Ranger fans should not worry about injury, the Docs mis-diagnosed his injury for a few years… last year they finally got it right + will be healthy years to come. This guy is a powerhouse and will be a great asset for 5 years.

Basically, Gomer was swapped with Gabby’s contract… who wouldn’t agree to this? GJ Sather, you’re making me dance. Now just convince Kovalchuk next year at Free Agency.

I dont disagree with you. WHEN HEALTHY, Gaborik is a Force. Just one question? Whose gonna give him the puck? Gomez is gone, Naslund Retired, Drury is a yr older, Zherdev more than likely is going to the KHL in Russia. This cant be the only move we make…. A trade maybe in the works? Who else is left via free agency?!? I like gaborik, just dont think theres enough around him. We lost too many Pts from last years roster to replace it with ONE player…..

It’s all about keeping him healthy. But like someone said above, it’s basically a wash salary wise with Gomez, so how could you beat that?

I would have liked to see Heatley in a Rangers shirt, but it’s time for our young talent to get a chance. Ranger fans have been ranting to keep our young potential stars (which i agree), unfortunately Ottawa would not accept our trades unless it involved our top younglings: Cally, Duby, Staal.

Gomez : top 5 playmaker & speed through zone, but he’ll never be a star on the rangers. He does not have the mindset to be a NYer, lets at least acknowledge this one. SHIP HIM (which they have).

Drury : top 5 all around player, but comeon drury get a longer stick + stop being pick pocketed. DEFENSE FIRST, OFFENSE NEXT (keep him).

Zherdev : top 5 most raw talented player, torts should whip him into a 25-30 goal scorer. LETS GET OFF HIS BACK + GIVE HIM A CHANCE.

*Regarding playmakers, everyone is a playmaker. This isn’t MLB, where we need a Designated Hitter or something.

Everything you say makes sense, I dont deny that…. I just dont see where they are going to make up the points that they lost with Gomez (58) Zherdev (58) and Naslund (46)…… I still believe come the start of next season Zherdev will be in Russia… Any opinions on this??

Marion Gaborik a great pick up if he stays healthy and he looked pretty good over the last 17 games last year. But if he gets hurt and we’re 7.5 in the hole again can we finally see Sather to the exit door please. That’s why I look at this as a no lose situation. The Rangers are either going to get a great scorer or get rid of a rotten GM. Best skater in the league??? Ovechkin may have something to say about that but there’s no doubt he is as prolific a scorer as there is when healthy. And I still say lets make a trade with the Thrashers for Kovulchuk. Dubi, Rozi, Drury, Korpikoski and Sanguinetti (if necessary) to get this deal done. Let me repeat NOBODY HAS SCORED AS MANY GOALS IN THE LAST 6 YEARS AS KOVULCHUK! We need Ilya Kovulchuk and i would give those five players in a NY minute to get him.

by the way since we’re going for 5 years maybe we should have made it a 7 year deal at 5 mil per so less of a cap hit per year. look at detroit and how they sign their players. And the deal hossa just signed for 12 years 5+ mil per. The cap has us handcuffed again but maybe we can make that big trade for Kovulchuk before he’s a free agent and tie that young sniper up for 10-12 years too.

Kovulchuk and Gaborik would be EXACTLY what we need. Would love to see that. And I think we have enough prospect talent to land that type of deal. Ive been saying it for a couple seasons now with my dad, we dont have that 100pt guy. Look at Pittsburgh, 2 of 3 top point scorers in the league in Crosby and Malkin. They will always contend with those two. We need our own 1-2 punch. You have my vote for Kovulchuk!!

fromtherink.com has reported that Nik Zherdev turned down a deal from the KHL and wants to play for the Rangers next season. FYI.

[...] Ranger fans seem mixed on Gaborik, based on posts to blog threads or their own commentaries. SNY’s bloggers worry about the injury problems but appreciate his obvious talent. Rangers Review definitely likes [...]
