Big Day for NYR

by Brian Monzo on June 30th, 2009 at 11:41 pm

It’s apparent that Glen Sather has something up his sleeve.  What that is only time will tell.  For the Rangers, today meant ridding themselves of Scott Gomez and his monster hit on the cap and adding two players they hope are long-term players in Chris Higgins and Ryan McDonagh.  Higgins, a three-time goal scorer, and RFA, will be looked at to score goals on the PP and on the PK.

While I’ve only seen a few videos on Ryan McDonagh, the fact is he a young first round pick, drafted two years back.  Young depth on defense is never a bad thing.  Thrown into a mix with Marc Staal, Dan Girardi, Matt Gilroy, Michael Del Zotto, Bobby Sanguinetti and Michael Sauer gives the Rangers a chance to have a top blueline from start to finish.

These additions seem to be solid ones, but the most important thing to come from today was the Rangers ridding themselves of Scott Gomez and his $7 million + off the cap.

At the end of the day, the biggest question for Ranger fans is ‘what’s next?’  We now know the answer to that question is not ‘Dany Heatley.’  Can get grab Vinny Lecavalier from Tampa?  Tortorella’s guy, but maybe still to expensive.  Can they sign Marian Hossa and Mike Cammalleri?  Is Marian Gaborik someone they will go after? A pair of Sedin’s, anyone?

Tomorrow is going to be very interesting.

Quick thought on Jay Bouwmeester signing with Calgary.  Kudos to Sutter for making the trade for his rights, then signing him long-term.  Between Bouwmeester, Dion Phaneuf, Robyn Regehr and the recently drafted Tim Erixon, the Flames blueline looks to be a force for years to come.

Seems like a pair of Sedin’s to me . Hank’s going to love that.
    How SWEDE IT IS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If we can get the Sedin brothers then yesterday’s moves were just a prelude to the biggest Rangers signing spree since we got Hedberg and Nilsson from Sweden. And how ironic it could be for another pair of Swedes! Glen Sather would have just about made up for all his douche baggery since 2000. And I can actually go to the Garden with aspirations of seeing live hockey beyond round 1 of the playoffs this year. LETS GO RANGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Sedin twins are the prize package, they are the ones who we want to get. If we land both of them well Merry Christmas to us. Right now I feel like it’s Christmas Eve and I’m up in bed wondering what Santa is going to leave for me under the tree. The Sedin twins will do just fine Santa, glad i was a good boy in section 403!

The only thing up Glen Sather’s sleeve is an old hairy arm.

How many times have we been burned by a single big signing? I don’t think Sather can do enough to get them to the cup final this year or even 10-11. Going after the Sedins or another big contract may put them back in a tough spot cap-wise after next season when Staal, Girardi need new deals. I’m all for signing 1 or 2 mid tier FA’s to 2-3 year contracts if they’re reasonable and develop a team around youth that Torts likes.

The worst of that is we may be wasting Hank
