Sam Weinman of the Journal News reports, C Scott Gomez is expected to play after missing practice with the flu and Aaron Voros will be out of the lineup.
According to Weinman, Petr Prucha will play in place of Voros tonight.
The Rangers have announced D Corey Potter has been assigned to their AHL Hartford affiliate.
Potter’s return to Hartford means D Michal Rozsival is back with the team, who missed Saturday’s game due to personal reasons.
Greg Wyshynski of Yahoo’s hockey blog, Puck Daddy, provides five reasons why the Rangers do not need Sean Avery.
Among the reasons Wyshynski gives include, the distraction Avery would be in the locker room, and the problem of what the Stars would want in return, but the big reason Wyshynski points out, is their is ‘no messiah for the Rangers,’ writing:
” At first, the fans wanted Brendan Shanahan. He’s not there. Henrik Lundqvist wanted Mats Sundin. He chose Vancouver. Now, [Larry] Brooks and a slew of others are asking for Sean Avery … how long before someone suggests kidnapping Jagr between periods of a KHL game?”
However, Wyshynski does provide a few entertaining ideas on where Avery should land, including as a judge on America’s Next Top Model.
The Associated Press reports, former Rangers prospect Alexei Cherepanov may have engaged in blood doping.
According to the Report, blood and urine samples taken from Cherepanov show the 19-year-old prospect engaged in blood doping
The report also found Cherepanov, who collapsed and later died during a KHL game in October, suffered from myocarditis and should not have been playing hockey at a professional level.
Earlier this year, Russian officials had found an area manager and KHL officials negligent for not having medical personal onsite during the October 13 game.
Nichols: The death of Cherepanov continues to baffle me. And, now the relevation of his heart condition adds to it. Didn’t the Rangers and other teams involved with Cherepanov conduct a full medical evaluation? And, if so, why wasn’t his condition diagnosed at that time.
Over at KuklasKorner, Patrick Hoffman, who also writes for SNYRangersBlog, spoke with Scotty Hockey after Saturday night’s Rangers-Devils game.
Speaking of Scotty Hockey, he remembers former Ranger captain, Mike Gartner, who had his number retired by the Capitals last night.
Sean Zandberg of Waiting for Stanley thinks the Rangers have a Mats Sundin hangover.
Finally, Bruce Garrioch of the Toronto Sun explains why the Winter Classic could be postponed.
Michael Obernauer of the Daily News reads between the lines of Rangers coach Tom Renney’s recent fiery comments and speculates who the coach may have been talking about.
Obernauer quoted Renney as saying he is not happy with the performance of ‘key people’ on the team.
While not mentioning any player specifically, Obernauer believes D Wade Redden is a prime candidate.
Meanwhile, Larry Brooks of the New York Post goes a bit further, saying it’s time for Renney to hold Chris Drury and Scott Gomez accountable for their performances.
Brooks believes if Renney does not do so now, his replacement may do so.
Obernauer and Brooks both mention possible line changes in their pieces.
Nichols: Regardless of what action needs to be taken, something needs to be done. A shakeup is needed. Line changes, experiementing with new special teams play, benchings or the head coach, whatever it is, the Rangers need to try it and do so soon.
The Larry Brooks of the New York Post says that Tom Renney should take a stand and start benching players.
The Daily News has an article about the Rangers feeling Tom Renney’s wrath.

Enough is enough already. Something isn’t right. After last nights loss to the Devils on Garden ice, something has to be done. There is zero accountability. I love Tom Renney, but he needs to get his act together. How he has Brandon Dubinsky (I understand he is lacking weapons), Aaron Voros, Nigel Dawes and Fred Sjostrom out there each and every night and get squat from them is outlandish, while Petr Prucha and Dan Fritsche sit in the press box.
Dubinsky has one goal in 28 games and has been invisible. We all know he is a talented player, but perhaps watching the game in a suit may do him some good. The bottom line is, a player expected to produce needs to and he isn’t.
Voros has not been a factor for two months. He is a questionable skater and cannot fight. He should be on the fourth line at best. When he doesn’t get his body in front of the net, he is useless.
Dawes needs to score, bottom line. He has no size and is a weak skater. His only attribute is he can score, but when he doesn’t his presence is non-existent.
Maybe they should call up Artem Anisimov, having a solid season with the Wolfpack. Corey Potter has played well is his two games and adds another Dan Girardi like defenseman.
One guy that can’t be blamed is Henrik Lundqvist — despite giving up a lot of goals, he is getting no help. The defense is breaking down constantly and the turnovers are out of control.
The effort at times may be there for this team, but the results aren’t.
Tomorrow is now a must win. If the Rangers cannot beat the Islanders at home, the team is in trouble, if not already.
Recaps of last nights game from the Post, Daily News, Times, Newsday and Journal News.
Larry Brooks of the Post says that the way the team is playing now is the same as it was when Sean Avery was acquired.
